In the 1980s, North Oakland became a refuge for thousands of Eritreans fleeing war and famine. Less well known than their Ethiopian neighbors, Eritreans have built a thriving community whose members have brought spicy cuisine, strong coffee, and a longing for home to 51st and Telegraph.
